Bronze Figure – Memorial (1928/29) – Signed Ernst Barlach

This Contemporary Sculpture is an homage to Ernst Barlach’s Magdeburg Memorial, which symbolizes the gruesome reality of war. Six figures are gathered around a cross that is provided with the years of the First World War. The central figure of this ensemble is a young man in the centre who is joined by two grim-looking soldiers at his sides and three additional characters at their feet who symbolize sorrow, death and terror.

This motif of Barlach is seen as a warning about military conflicts and can nowadays be found at Magdeburg’s Cathedral. It impressively demonstrates the impacts of war on the human psyche.

Ernst Barlach was born 2 January 1870 in Wedel, Schleswig-Holstein. 68 years later, the famous sculptor died of a heart attack in Rostock. One year before his death, the artist had to bear the labelling of his works as “degenerated art” by the Nazis. As a consequence, all of his works were banned from the public sphere. Nowadays, however, Barlach is said to be one of the most influential German sculptors in the history of art. Some of his most famous pieces are: “The Book Reader” (1936), “The Reunion” (1926), “The Refugee” (1920), “The Wanderer in the Wind” (1934), “Laughing Old Woman” (1937) and “Freezing Old Woman” (1937).
