Alfred Stevens was a British sculptor who was born 18 January 1818 in Dorset. Being the son of a house painter, he was confronted with the arts at an early age and produced his first paintings when he was a child. In 1833, he left his home and studied in Italy for nine years where he also worked for Bertel. Back in England, Stevens became a teacher at the School of Design and later on worked at a company that specialised in the production of bronze sculptures. One of his most famous works is the Wellington Monument at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The artist died 1 May 1875 in his art studio in London.
