Franz Xaver Messerschmidt’s character heads belong to the most popular work of the German-Austrian sculptor. These heads are self- portraits with bizarre and comical facial expressions with many details. Messerschmidt’s famous collection includes approximately 52 heads. This character head is a kind of bizarre facial expression made by the artist Messerschmidt. The figure was made of 100% bronze and handcrafted.

As all of the bronze products in our shop, this exhibit is hand-cast in our own foundry and subject to our strict quality inspections throughout the entire process of fabrication. All of our sculptures are exclusively compounded with the help of lost-wax casting.

The artist Franz Xaver Messerschmidt attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria and worked as a sort of court artist for the Austrian ruler Maria Theresia. Alongside with these rather official works, Franz Xaver Messerschmidt also created the so-called “character heads” which brought to him fame, even in after his death. The mostly bizarre busts show emotions and grimaces, mirroring the artist himself. Many took these sculptures as a sign of some mental disorder of Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, but these claims are of no proof.
