Barlach’s trip to Russia in 1906 resulted in a number of beggars sculptures. In 1907 – during a period, which is still heavily influenced by Art Nouveau – Barlach created the „Russian Beggar“, probably the most important work of this period. The beggars’ characters created by Barlach reflect the impressions of his summer trip to Russia resists from 1906. Barlach’s art works deal with the social hardship of people in Russia.
